Last August, I mentioned we’re in the “dog days” of summer…this year I realized that I had no idea why we call it that! Apparently, it’s because the Sirius star system (a.k.a. the “Dog Star”) rises around this time of year. I think I’ll still associate it with taking the dogs out on those hot, sticky evenings for a walk, those times when it feels like you’re walking through soup.
Since it’s going to be hot out, don’t forget – older adults are DEFINITELY “cool…” but are also more prone to heat stress. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay informed about the weather! Bugbee is a public cooling station, so if your AC goes out (or if you don’t have one in the first place), you are welcome to come over and cool off. We’ve got books, puzzles, games, computers, food, conversation – you won’t be bored!
August also means I’m going into my third year in service as executive director. I’ve been reflecting on everything we’ve gone through over the past two years. The worst of the pandemic was rough but, on the other hand, nothing beats how fun it was to watch the Center come back to life, and to finally start meeting many of you. Seeing and hearing from you all has kept this job fun, interesting, and full of laughs – so, cheers to more good times and awesome memories ahead.
This month’s calendar has a ton to look forward to. Who knew pickleball would be so popular? I’m excited for another night opening. And a trip to see baseball! Sadly it won’t be to see the Yankees, but the Fisher Cats in Manchester are a wee bit closer. That trip is going to be excellent if only for the food. We still have a few spots, so consider signing up to enjoy America’s favorite pastime.
Thanks everyone, hope you’re enjoying your summer, and see you around!
Mark Bradley
Executive Director
